Is it safe to buy a Huawei phone? A look at the Huawei Mate 20X 5G

Huawei was previously known (and celebrated) for its competitively priced handsets, equipped with cutting edge specs, until the Chinese manufacturer came under a far darker spotlight. At the heart of the matter, the global telecoms giant has faced and denied accusations since 2018, from intellectual property theft, fraud and spying, to the obstruction of justice.

So, should you really purchase a Huawei device?

As the third largest supplier following Samsung and Apple, the possibility that Huawei is corrupted certainly raises the barometer of technological risk, from full-blown espionage to a mass disruption of communication. Perhaps then, it's no wonder the U.S. pulled back. Notably, however, there is no public evidence whatsoever that any Huawei device poses a threat to privacy or digital security for the everyday user, let alone any nation.

A note from Huawei

John Peters

"At Huawei, we always put our consumers first, regardless of the challenges we face. All Huawei smartphones, tablets and PCs will continue to receive security patches, Android updates and Microsoft support. Anyone who has already bought, or is about to buy a Huawei smartphone, can continue to access the world of apps as they have always done. All devices continue to be covered by our manufacturer’s warranty and will receive full service support accordingly."

Huawei's warranty pledge, in combination with a lack of evidence over the last 11 months, suggests that if you're a consumer with your eye on a Huawei device, you should be safe to go ahead* - particularly if it's the outstanding camera that caught your eye.

Huawei has once again joined forces with Leica, the German optics enterprise, renowned for it’s high-quality lightweight rangefinder cameras. The rear camera on the new 5G Mate 20 X goes above and beyond, as a Leica Triple camera with a 40 MP (Wide Angle Lens, f/1.8 aperture) + 20 MP (Ultra Wide Angle Lens, f/2.2 aperture) + 8 MP (Telephoto, f/2.4 aperture), supporting autofocus and AIS (Huawei AI Image Stabilization). This means the camera will utilise intelligent photographic algorithms to identify different types of scenery and objects in real time. By doing so, the camera will automatically adjust the colours, contrast, brightness and exposure for the perfect snap, with minimal effort.
