Samsung has revealed the new Galaxy S9

Samsung has revealed the highly anticipated Galaxy S9. The S9 continues the popular trend of bezel-less screens, sporting a 5.8″ full frontal glass, edge-to-edge display, termed by Samsung as an “Infinity Display”. The Infinity displays have been showcased on previous Samsung models including the S8, the S8 Plus and Note 8. For those keen on previous designs, the Galaxy S9 follows closely to the look of S8 and has been released alongside a second, larger version, the Galaxy S9+, which sports a 6.”2 Infinity Display.

The latest flagship packs a next generation dual-aperture camera, designed to adapt to super low and bright light automatically. In dark or nighttime settings, the S9 camera lens will open to F1.5 mode, providing multi-frame noise reduction so that you can capture nighttime shots with clarity. In the daylight, the lens will shift to F2.4 mode.  For those with a creative spark, the aperture can also be toggled manually to create a mood.

The camera also features new super slow-motion abilities, allowing you to shoot 960 frames per second in 6 second clips. This feature however only supports HD resolution which can drain both your storage (roughly, 100-200MB per minute of HD video) and battery life. However with the option to expand the memory and wireless quick charging, this is less of an issue for S9 users. Finally, the camera is equipped with upgraded optical image stabilisation so you’ll be able to minimise any vibrations from your hands for a steady shot.

The S9 has an improved version of Bixby, the Samsung virtual assistant, that can work alongside the updated camera to provide real-time language translation. Similarly to Google translate, with the S9 you can now point the camera (In Bixby mode) at some foreign text and Bixby will generate translated information overlaid onto the image it’s viewing in real-time, whether you wish to translate a road sign while navigating or decipher the lunch menu.

Further features include the latest version of Android – 8.0 Oreo, a waterproof body and improved stereo speakers, claimed by Samsung to provide 1.4x more powerful sound than any previous Galaxy model.  Security has also been given a boost with a new combination of facial recognition and a iris scan when unlocking your device. This is also useful for identification in low light settings as the two can work together to ensure you can be verified. This means the galaxy flagship now offers six different ways to secure your device, whether you choose the iris scanner, facial recognition technology, fingerprint sensor, a simple password, pattern or pin.
