Budget Phone of the Year winner – TrustedReviews

Design

With a Full HD 5.5″ display, the front of the Moto G4 sports a minimalist design, free from branding and buttons of any sort, apart from a small silver-rimmed speaker opening at the top. And it’s not just the front that’s been stripped back, the G4 is the thinnest Moto G yet. When it comes to the back, the previous rigid back has been replaced by a soft-touch textured plastic for easy gripping. Like it’s predecessors, the back can be popped off and replaced with separately sold back-plates to offer you colour customisation. As well as a choice of 8 coloured backs, you can choose to have a dark moon or metallic silver front and frame, pick between a variety of 5 colours for the accent, add engraving to the back for just £5.00 extra and choose a personalised greeting that will appear whenever you re-start your device. Unfortunately, the G4 isn’t IPX7 water-resistant like the Moto G3, however a special coating ensures it is still splash-proof. Finally, the G4’s sim slot works with both a Micro and Nano card, allowing you to have two SIM plans or phone numbers in one phone.

Features & specs

The G4 runs on an un-touched version of Android Marshmallow, with the objective of clutter-free, simplicity and faster performance. No duplicate apps, no bloatware, no skinned menus or superfluous features. Just Android the way Google designed it. Better yet, the G4 is more likely to get newer versions of Android – such as the latest Android Nougat, and security updates before other phones as it doesn’t need to be tweaked.  A few small additions however include ‘quick shake’ to open up the camera, a basic Help app, FM radio and you’ll be able to view your latest notifications and the time when you pick up the G4 thanks to a glowing display. The G4 also supports Marshmallow’s Adoptable Storage so you’ll be able to format the microSD card as internal storage. Meaning you could insert a 64GB card, and boost your 16GB to a whopping 80GB. Offering a huge improvement from the G3’s 8GB. You can also take advantage of free storage with Google photos, allowing you to stay automatically backed up and organised, and take advantage of two years of storage at original quality. When it comes to power, the G4’s battery is designed to give you a full day of power without needing to re-charge. You can also purchase the TurboPower™ charger for around £25 to give your Moto G up to 6 hours of power – from just 15 minutes of charging.

Overview

While the G4 may lack a fingerprint scanner and NFC technology available in other flagship smartphones, there is no denying that the 4th gen Moto G offers impeccable value for money. With impressive speeds, a full HD display, powerful battery life and a 13MP camera, the G4 is an ideal money-saver, and really does out-do it’s budget rivals.
