Rumour has it, Google is working on incorporating facial recognition software directly into the hardware of their smartphones – meaning relying on communicating with remote data centers over the web will not be necessary.

Alongside predictable uses such as security and device unlocking, reports say Google sees a wide range of potential applications for the new facial scanning technology, including

“identifying people to authorise transactions, aiding blind people and translating signs.”

Teaming up with Movidious, the same company that previously assisted Google with their Project Tango 3D Mapping initiative, the Chief Executive Remi El-Ouazzane has suggested that this technology will be incorporated into Google smartphones in the “not-too distant future”.
